Murray Rose
Four Olympic golds across 1956 and 1960, the original distance king
Overview
Rose won the 400 m and 1500 m freestyle at Melbourne 1956 at age 17 and defended the 400 m at Rome 1960, adding relay golds for four career titles. A vegetarian athlete when that was rare, he studied and trained in the United States. He set world records and inspired later Australian distance greats.
