Overview
Schollander won the 100 m freestyle and 400 m freestyle plus two relays in Tokyo, setting the single Games benchmark Mark Spitz and Michael Phelps later chased. At 18 he was the youngest American male swimmer to win gold. He later set world records in freestyle events from 200 to 400 m.
