Madison won the 100 m freestyle, 400 m freestyle and relay at Los Angeles 1932, the first American woman to win three swimming golds at one Games. She held all 16 American freestyle records at her peak. Hollywood made films about her, and she worked as a swimming instructor in Seattle in later years.
