Overview
Marilyn Bell of Toronto entered Lake Ontario in September 1954 after two other swimmers withdrew, and reached the Canadian shore after about 21 hours of cold, chop and lamprey eels, aged 16. She was the first person to cross the lake. Her arrival drew a crowd estimated in the hundreds of thousands along the waterfront.
