The Ice Mile
One mile in water of 5 degrees or colder under strict winter rules
Overview
An official ice mile requires a 1.6 km swim in water at 5 degrees or below wearing only a standard costume, cap and goggles, witnessed under winter swimming federation rules. The discipline grew from Eastern European and British winter clubs into an organized international structure. Medical oversight and post swim rewarming protocols are central to every attempt.
