Dressel won six golds at the 2019 world championships, then five golds at Tokyo 2020 including the 50 m and 100 m freestyle and 100 m butterfly, the latter in a world record 49.45. His explosive start and underwater speed redefined sprint technique. He became the sprint cornerstone of the US team after Phelps era.
