Shirley Babashoff
Multiple silvers behind East Germany at Montreal 1976 and a relay gold
Overview
Babashoff was the leading American freestyler of the 1970s but finished second to East German swimmers in several events at the 1976 Olympics. She publicly questioned their physiques and was branded a sore loser, before the opening of Stasi files confirmed a state doping program. Her consolation was gold in the 4 x 100 m freestyle relay, where the Americans beat the East Germans in world record time.
