Mark Spitz
Seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Games, all in world record time
Overview
Spitz entered seven events at Munich and won all seven, each as a world record, a single Games mark that stood until Michael Phelps won eight in 2008. He had earlier taken two golds at Mexico City 1968. He retired at 22 after Munich and later attempted a comeback for 1992. His moustache at a time when swimmers shaved everything became iconic.
