Overview
Gross won the 200 m freestyle and 200 m butterfly at Los Angeles 1984 and a relay gold at Seoul 1988, with six Olympic medals in total. His 200 m butterfly world record of 1:53.08 from 1986 stood for nearly a decade. He dominated butterfly and middle distance freestyle through the 1980s.
