Three golds at Los Angeles 1984 after missing 1980 to the boycott
Overview
Gaines was the top sprinter of 1980 when the American boycott removed his best shot, including world records in the 100 m freestyle. He returned to win the 100 m freestyle and two relays at Los Angeles 1984. He became the voice of American swimming broadcasting for decades afterwards.
