Overview
The Manhattan Island Marathon Swim circles the island in about 45.9 km, taking in the Hudson, Harlem and East rivers with their changing currents. The organized annual race dates to 1982, after earlier solo circumnavigations. Water quality improved dramatically from the 1980s to the 2000s, turning the event into a celebrated fixture.
