Overview
Thompson won 12 Olympic medals between 1992 and 2004, including eight relay golds, making her one of the most decorated American women in Olympic history. She also held world records in the 100 m freestyle and 100 m butterfly. Between Olympic cycles she studied medicine and went on to work as an anesthesiologist after retiring from the sport.
