Why Olympic Pools Are 50 Meters Long
Early Olympic swimming happened wherever water existed. In 1896 athletes raced in the cold open sea near Athens, in 1900 in the Seine with the current, and in 1904 in a lake in St. Louis.
London 1908 built the first dedicated pool at 100 m. Paris 1924 then introduced the 50 m course at Tourelles, and it has been the standard ever since. Modern Olympic pools are deep, typically 3 m, because depth reduces turbulence from the bottom, and wide gutters and lane lines soak up waves.
Faster pools are engineering, not luck..
