English Channel Swimming Rules Explained

Channel swimming runs under rules codified over a century. The swimmer starts on dry land, finishes on dry land, and may wear only a standard one or two piece costume, one cap, and goggles. Wetsuits, fins, and buoyancy aids are banned.

An official observer on the pilot boat documents the entire crossing and ratifies the swim. Feeding happens by a pole or line from the boat without touching it. Physical contact with the swimmer or support crew ends the swim.

These rules, set by the Channel Swimming Association and sister bodies, are copied by marathon swims worldwide..
